Since the original Game Boy, released in 1989, Nintendo had focused on the games and had not released a real new generation (the Pocket and Light models are only evolutions of the Game Boy). It is in 1998 that a second generation is envisaged, which would coincide roughly with the tenth anniversary of the first model. The main expectation of the players was to have a color screen, as was done on the competing machines for a long time (Game Gear, Atari Lynx...)
So it was in the fall of 1998 that the Game Boy Color (GBC) came out in Japan and America, to arrive in 1999 in Europe. The success is immense because the console progresses graphically while remaining at 100% backward. It must also be said that its release coincides with the global phenomenon of Pokémon games.
